Things you need to know if you are visiting Sarajevo during the winter

Sarajevo, Baščaršija with its tiny mahalas and the surrounding mountains are now decorated with a crisp white snow cover. Snow definitely “suits” Sarajevo, especially during the pre-festive period when everyone is unwinding and exploring new holiday possibilities.

To help you prepare if you are visiting Sarajevo during the winter, here are some useful service information you should keep in mind.

Arriving by car

Sarajevo is located in the central part of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is connected by a Transversal road with two main routes in the region: Adriatic Highway and Motorway Belgrade-Zagreb. If you are arriving to Sarajevo between 15 November and 15 April, winter tires and equipment is mandatory regardless of the weather conditions.

There is a possibility for traffic problems due to frequent snowfall and special attention should be paid when driving through mountain roads which can be covered in snow.

For road assistance and information you can contact BiHAMK on ++387 33 282 100.

If however you do not wish to travel by private car, there are several other options available, so you can choose between a bus, a train or an airplane.

Arriving by Bus or Train

The main Bus and Train Station is only a 15 minute walk or a short tram ride away from the city center and there is a taxi stand and a tram station just across the road. Tram umber 1 will take you towards Baščaršija and number 4 towards Ilidža.

Accommodation

If you are planning to spend few days in our beautiful city which looks magical when covered in snow, make sure you book your accommodation in good time to avoid any disappointments due to the holiday rush.

Weather conditions

According to the forecast, we are not expecting this winter to be as cold as the last one, so we need to take full advantage of the snow and fresh air, the charm and relaxed atmosphere of “down to earth” Sarajevo, and have a proper break in this winter wonderland.

What to bring with you

Regardless of the season, if you are coming to Sarajevo it is always recommended to bring some warm clothes because in a city located at the foot of several Olympic Mountains even summer nights can be chilly. Winter, of course, requires more wardrobes so make sure you pack your scarves, hats, gloves, warm jackets, jumpers and other winter essentials.

If you are visiting Sarajevo Mountains and planning to ski, sledge or simply have fun, bring your ski-jacket and the rest of the equipment can be leased. Be prepared for the mountain air which is considerably fresher than the city air.

The only other thing you should bring is good mood.

Enjoy Sarajevo!
